Proton X70 Used Car Guide — C-Segment SUV Value
· Roda Editorial · Updated
The Proton X70 is a C-segment SUV, larger than the X50, and it has been on sale in Malaysia since late 2018. Over the years it has changed from imported to locally assembled, and from a 1.8-litre turbo with a six-speed automatic to a 1.5-litre turbo with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission (DCT). Those changes matter when you buy used. This guide explains the versions, the warranty, and what to check.
Versions at a glance
Based on paultan.org's model history and Proton's model page:
- December 2018: launch of the imported (CBU) X70.
- 2020: locally assembled (CKD) X70.
- June 2022: update (MC).
- August 2024: facelift.
- January 2026: update (MC3), the current model.
Engines and gearboxes
- 2018 CBU: 1.8-litre turbo (1.8 TGDi) with a six-speed automatic, according to paultan.org's specifications.
- 2020 CKD: the 1.8 TGDi paired with a seven-speed DCT, as reported at the time.
- 2022 update: a 1.5-litre turbo (1.5 TGDi) with the seven-speed DCT was added, while a 1.8-litre variant was still listed.
- Current model: 1.5-litre turbo (1.5TD) rated at 181 PS and 290 Nm, with a seven-speed DCT, according to Proton's page.
Confirm the engine and gearbox of the exact car from the registration record, the ad and a test drive. A conventional automatic and a DCT feel different, especially at low speed.
Warranty
According to Proton's warranty page, as of October 2026, the X70 has a 5-year, unlimited mileage warranty from first registration. Proton lists exclusions, including missed periodic services, servicing at non-authorised Proton outlets, and non-genuine parts or lubricants not approved by Proton.
Proton's page does not state whether the warranty transfers to the next owner. If the car is within five years of first registration, ask a Proton authorised service centre in writing whether the warranty remains valid for you.
X70s registered more than five years ago, which includes the 2018 to 2020 cars, are out of the standard warranty period. For those, service history and an independent inspection matter even more.
What to check on a used X70
Paperwork
- The name on the registration record matches the seller's IC.
- The chassis and engine numbers match the record.
- Any loan will be settled at transfer. See how to sell a car with an outstanding loan.
- No outstanding summonses or blacklist.
Service history
Ask for the service booklet or the history in the MyProton app. On a turbo engine, check that oil changes were done at the intervals in the booklet with an approved oil.
Gearbox
- Six-speed automatic (2018 CBU): changes should be smooth, without flare or harsh shifts when warm.
- Seven-speed DCT: pull away gently several times and creep in traffic. Some firmness is normal; heavy judder, clunks or delay are not. Ask whether gearbox software updates or repairs have been done.
Turbo engine
- Start from cold and listen for rattles.
- Accelerate firmly in a safe place; power should build smoothly with no warning lights.
- Look for oil leaks around the turbo and blue smoke from the exhaust.
Body, interior and electrics
- Check panel gaps and paint for accident repairs.
- Test the infotainment, cameras, any powered features, and all driver assistance features on that variant.
- Test the air-conditioning in traffic for at least fifteen minutes.
- Check the suspension on speed bumps for knocks.
Flood signs
Look for silt or water marks under the carpets, in the boot and under the seats.
Inspection and transfer
Book an independent inspection before you pay the balance, and complete the MV15 inspection for the transfer. See our PUSPAKOM inspection guide and JPJ ownership transfer guide.
Certified option
Proton Certified Pre-Owned lists an in-house inspection and a 12-month or 25,000 km extended warranty on the engine and transmission, according to its official page. For an older X70 out of the standard warranty, compare this with the cost of an independent inspection and a repair reserve. See certified pre-owned cars.
Running costs
Road tax depends on engine capacity: a 1.8-litre costs more than a 1.5-litre under JPJ's rate guide. See road tax renewal online. Insurance depends on the car's value and your no claim discount; see car insurance renewal.
Alternatives to compare
If you do not need the extra space, see the Proton X50 guide. For a hybrid SUV option, read the hybrid cars guide.
