Proton X50 Used Buying Guide Malaysia
· Roda Editorial · Updated
The Proton X50 is a B-segment SUV with a 1.5-litre turbo engine and a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission (DCT). It has been on sale since 2020, with updates in 2024 and 2025, so the used market has cars of different ages and specifications. This guide covers the versions, Proton's warranty terms, and what to check on a used X50, with extra attention on the turbo and the DCT.
Versions at a glance
Based on paultan.org's model history and Proton's model page:
- October 2020: launch of the X50 (model code SX11).
- June 2024: update (RC).
- July 2025: facelift, sold as the "All-New X50", the current model.
Engine and gearbox
- Current model: 1.5-litre turbo (1.5TD) rated at 181 PS and 290 Nm, with a seven-speed DCT, according to Proton's page.
- Earlier models: a 1.5-litre turbo in two versions, the 1.5T and the 1.5 TGDi on the flagship variant, both with the seven-speed DCT, as listed in paultan.org's specifications.
Check the variant on the registration record and in the ad. Equipment, including driver assistance features, differs between variants and years.
Warranty
According to Proton's warranty page, as of October 2026, the X50 has a 5-year, unlimited mileage warranty from first registration. Proton lists exclusions, including:
- Missing periodic services as specified in the service booklet.
- Any service carried out at non-authorised Proton outlets.
- Non-genuine parts, and lubricants or additives not approved by Proton.
Proton's page does not state whether the warranty transfers to the next owner. A used X50 registered in the last five years may still be within the warranty period, so ask a Proton authorised service centre in writing whether it remains valid for you.
Service history
The MyProton app lets owners view their car's details and service history, and book services, according to its official listing. Ask the seller to show the service history in the app or the service booklet. For a turbo engine and a DCT, a complete record at the intervals in the booklet matters.
What to check on a used X50
Paperwork
- The name on the registration record matches the seller's IC.
- The chassis and engine numbers match the record.
- Any loan will be settled at transfer.
- No outstanding summonses or blacklist.
DCT
A dual-clutch gearbox changes gear quickly, but it behaves differently from a conventional automatic at low speed.
- Pull away gently from a stop several times, and creep in traffic. Some firmness is normal; heavy judder, clunks or a delay before the car moves are not.
- Reverse up a slope if you can, and listen for slipping.
- Watch for gearbox warning messages on the instrument panel.
- Ask whether software updates or gearbox work have been done at a service centre, and see the records.
Turbo engine
- Start from cold and listen for rattles.
- Accelerate firmly in a safe place. Power should build smoothly, without warning lights.
- Look for oil leaks and blue smoke.
- Check that oil changes were done at the intervals in the booklet, with an approved oil.
Body, interior and electrics
- Look for repainted panels, uneven gaps and scraped bumpers.
- Test the infotainment, cameras, sensors and all driver assistance features fitted to that variant.
- Check that no driver assistance warnings stay on.
- Test the air-conditioning in traffic.
Flood signs
Look under the carpets and in the boot for silt or water marks, and for rust under the dashboard.
Inspection and transfer
Book an inspection before you pay the balance, and complete the MV15 inspection for the transfer. See our PUSPAKOM inspection guide and JPJ ownership transfer guide.
Certified option
Proton Certified Pre-Owned lists an in-house inspection and a 12-month or 25,000 km extended warranty on the engine and transmission, according to its official page. See certified pre-owned cars.
Running costs
Road tax is based on engine capacity; see road tax renewal online. Budget for tyres, brakes and the battery if they are due, and keep servicing on schedule while the warranty applies.
Alternatives to compare
