Used Cars in Sabah — KK, Sandakan & East Malaysia Guide
· Roda Editorial · Updated
Buying a used car in Sabah has a few things that do not apply in Peninsular Malaysia. Road tax rates are different, cars from Labuan may carry duty-free conditions, and a car shipped from the Peninsula needs its paperwork checked carefully. Distances between towns are long, so a wasted viewing costs a day. This guide covers where to look, Sabah-specific checks, and how to complete the purchase.
Rules change. This guide reflects information as of October 2026. Check JPJ and the Royal Malaysian Customs Department for your situation.
Where to look
- Open used cars in Sabah and add the model, price range and year you want.
- Check the town in each ad. Kota Kinabalu, Sandakan, Tawau, Lahad Datu and Keningau are hours apart by road, so group viewings by area.
- Save the search, and shortlist a few cars before you travel.
- Ask the seller for a video call walk-around before you make a long trip.
If you need a vehicle for rural roads or plantation work, a four-wheel drive pickup may suit you. Read our used Toyota Hilux guide.
Road tax in Sabah
JPJ calculates road tax separately for Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah and Sarawak, and the Sabah rates for private cars are lower than the Peninsular rates for most engine sizes. Car ads on Roda show a road tax estimate for the region based on JPJ's rate guide.
If you plan to take the car to the Peninsula, note that JPJ said in 2018 that a vehicle with Sabah or Sarawak road tax may use that road tax in the Peninsula for up to three months, after which Peninsular rates apply. In June 2026, the Ministry of Transport said it plans to base road tax on where a vehicle is used, but no start date had been announced at the time of writing. Check JPJ for the current rule before you move a car.
Cars from Labuan
Labuan is a duty-free area. Vehicles bought there with duty and tax exemptions come with conditions when they are used outside Labuan. In December 2025, the Labuan customs director said such vehicles may be in the principal customs area, which includes mainland Sabah, for up to 90 days in a calendar year, and that vehicles breaking the rule can be seized. From 1 January 2026, the exemption also only applies to vehicles valued up to RM300,000.
If a car for sale has Labuan registration or was bought duty-free:
- Ask the seller directly whether duty and tax were paid.
- Ask how the car can be used legally in mainland Sabah, and check with the Royal Malaysian Customs Department before you pay.
- Be careful of prices that look low compared with similar cars on the mainland.
Cars shipped from the Peninsula
Some cars in Sabah were bought in the Peninsula and shipped across. That is common and legal, but check:
- That the name on the registration record matches the seller's IC.
- The shipping documents, and whether any loan on the car has been settled.
- That the road tax in force matches where the car is now used.
- The car's history. Ask for service records from both sides of the South China Sea.
Condition checks
- Underbody: rural and plantation roads are hard on suspension and the underside of the car. Look for damaged sump guards, bent suspension arms and leaks.
- Four-wheel drive: on a 4x4, engage four-wheel drive during the test drive and listen for clunks.
- Coastal corrosion: cars kept near the coast need a rust check on the sills, floor and brake lines.
- Flood damage: check under carpets and in the spare tyre well for silt and water marks, and for rust under the dashboard.
Inspection and transfer
Get a condition check before you pay the balance. For cars, the JPJ ownership transfer also needs an MV15 inspection report. Check PUSPAKOM's website for the centre nearest you and for booking. See our PUSPAKOM inspection guide.
JPJ Sabah's main office is in Kota Kinabalu, with branches in towns including Sandakan, Tawau, Lahad Datu, Keningau, Tuaran, Papar, Beaufort, Kudat and Semporna. The JPJ ownership transfer guide explains the counter and online options.
Before you pay in full:
- Match the chassis and engine numbers with the registration record.
- Confirm any loan has been settled, or agree in writing how your payment settles it.
- Check for outstanding summonses or a blacklist that could block the transfer.
- Pay the balance when the transfer is ready.
After you buy
Book a service with a workshop near you. Browse workshops in Sabah on Roda, and keep a towing contact for long drives between towns; see towing services.
