Toyota Alphard and Vellfire — used and recond buying guide
The Toyota Alphard and Vellfire are large luxury MPVs, twins under the skin, with powered sliding doors and lounge-style rear seats. In Malaysia you will find official units sold by UMW Toyota alongside many recond imports from Japan. They are complex cars, and repairs to doors, seats and electronics add up, so check carefully before you buy.
This guide reflects information as of October 2026.
Generations on the market
Based on paultan.org's model histories and published model information:
- AH20 (2008 to 2015): the Vellfire was introduced in this generation as the Alphard's twin. Engines were a 2.4-litre four-cylinder, a 3.5-litre V6 and a 2.4-litre hybrid. A facelift arrived in late 2011.
- AH30 (2015 to 2023): launched in Japan in January 2015 and facelifted in January 2018. Engines were a 2.5-litre four-cylinder, a 3.5-litre V6 and a 2.5-litre hybrid. The facelift brought a new 3.5-litre V6 with an eight-speed automatic.
- AH40 (2023 on): launched in Japan in June 2023. The V6 was dropped. Engines include a 2.4-litre turbo, a 2.5-litre four-cylinder and a 2.5-litre hybrid.
Check the model code and year of manufacture on the registration record and, for a recond car, on the auction sheet.
Official UMW Toyota units
According to paultan.org's launch reports, UMW Toyota has sold:
- AH30, from August 2016: the Alphard 3.5 V6 with a six-speed automatic, and the Vellfire 2.5 with a CVT.
- AH30 facelift, from 2018: the Vellfire 2.5 continued, and the Alphard got the new 3.5-litre V6 with an eight-speed automatic.
- AH40, from October 2023: the Alphard 2.4 turbo Executive Lounge with an eight-speed automatic, and the Vellfire 2.5.
- Vellfire Hybrid Executive Lounge, from January 2026: a 2.5-litre hybrid with an e-CVT, fully imported from Japan.
paultan.org reported in 2016 that UMW Toyota's units differ from Japanese-market cars in engine tuning, suspension and tyre options, and came with a five-year, unlimited mileage warranty that recond units do not have. For an official unit, ask a UMW Toyota service centre whether any warranty remains, and look at the service record.
Recond units
Recond Alphards and Vellfires come from Japan, often in Japanese-market variants with different equipment. Read our recond cars guide first, then:
- Ask for the auction sheet, and match the chassis number and mileage with the car.
- Look for an R or RA grade, which means repair history to the body structure.
- Check the variant and options on the sheet against the car. Lounge seats, rear screens and a sunroof should be present and working if listed.
- Ask whether the head unit and navigation were converted for Malaysia.
- Get the dealer's warranty in writing.
What to check
Powered doors and tailgate
- Open and close each sliding door several times with the button, the key and the handle. It should move smoothly, without stopping, grinding or reversing.
- Check the power tailgate the same way.
- Look at the door rails for wear, and listen for clicks from the motors.
Seats and cabin
- Run every powered seat function, including the leg rests on lounge seats.
- Test the rear air-conditioning and blowers on full, and check that the rear stays cold in traffic.
- Check the roof lining and the area around any sunroof for water marks.
- Test the rear screens, lights, curtains and sunshades.
Suspension and brakes
- These are heavy vehicles. Listen for knocks over bumps, and check for leaking dampers and worn bushes.
- Check tyre wear, the tyre date codes and the brake discs.
Engine and gearbox
- 2.5 four-cylinder with CVT: pull away gently and then firmly. There should be no judder or whine.
- 3.5 V6: check for oil leaks and for smooth gear changes.
- Hybrid: check for hybrid system warnings, and ask for a hybrid battery health check. See our hybrid cars guide.
Running costs
- Road tax: JPJ charges petrol cars by engine capacity, and the rate rises with every cc above 1,600 cc. A 3.5-litre V6 costs much more each year than a 2.5-litre. Estimate it with the road tax calculator, and read road tax renewal online.
- Insurance: get a quote for the exact model and variant before you commit, and ask what documents the insurer needs for a recond car.
- Parts: ask a workshop about parts for the exact variant. Parts for Japanese-market features may need to be ordered in.
Paperwork and payment
- Match the chassis and engine numbers with the registration record.
- For a used car, confirm any loan is settled at transfer. For an unregistered recond car, confirm it is registered in your name.
- Book an independent inspection before you pay the balance, and the MV15 inspection for a used transfer. See our PUSPAKOM guide.
- Plan the loan with the car loan calculator.
